The Theosophical Society was an organization formed in 1875 by Helena Blavatsky to advance Theosophy. Its headquarters moved with Blavatsky and President Henry Steel Olcott from New York to Adyar, an area of Chennai, in 1886. Annie Besant became a member of the Theosophical Society and a prominent lecturer on the subject. In 1907 she became president of the Theosophical Society.
